This Rocking Chair is similar to others on which I have previously worked. They are very interesting chairs and at times challenging projects, since you never really know what lies beneath the old finishing, joinery and wood type. This particular chair was generally made of teak and mahogany wood which gave it a nice contrast of grain and colour. Two spindles for the right-hand handle were missing, the main support spindle at the front and one of the filler spindles towards the center; which had to be made. Two cross tie spindles were also missing and were made using teak dowels. The seat was warped because of poor joinery and had to be straightened. All of this required the chair to be disassembled and the joints cleaned and prepared for rejoining. It was time consuming work, but this is usually the case with this type of work. You never know what lies underneath the original finish until you get into the work. The chair after reassembly was finished in a Satin Polyurethane varnish; to the satisfaction of the customer. Note: The center seat will be finished with caning work which will be done by the "Blind Welfare" skilled weavers in this filed. An updated photo will be added on its completion.
